Spirulina

Spirulina is a microscopic blue-green alga living both in sea and fresh water. Spirulina is the name for food produced primarily from two species of cyanobacteria: Arthrospira platensis, and Arthrospira maxima.

Arthrospira is cultivated around the world and is used as a human dietary supplement as well as a whole food. Spirulina contains a high amount of protein containing all essential amino acids and is superior to typical plant protein. Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid and also a source of alpha-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, stearidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and arachidonic acid.

Spirulina contains vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A, and vitamin E. and is a rich source of potassium. It also contains calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, and zinc.
