Black Cohosh (Actaea Racemosa)

There are a number of herbs on the market today that claim to help with a number of health conditions. Actaea racemosa, better known as black cohosh, is an herb that is native to the south eastern United States. Black cohash root has been used as an herbal remedy since before the Europeans came to the North American continent.

It is important to note that you must use the black cohash root. There are other types of cohash that exist (white, red), but these can be poisonous and are actually unrelated to the black cohash plant.

The root of this herb contains a number of chemicals that have positive effects on the body. Usually, these chemicals help with boosting the immune system and reducing inflammation. Other chemicals may even have positive effects on the brain.

Here is a brief look at what black cohash is regularly used for in the world of alternative medicine:
-Women’s health issues, including menopause, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), pain associated with menstruation, acne, and inducing labor.
-In some cases, black cohash root is used as a natural sedative.
-Mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and mood swings.
-Inflammation, including those related to fevers and sore throats.
-Skin problems, such as acne, warts, and moles.

Even though some of the use of the black cohash died out during the colonial era, there are many people around the world who still use it for its medicinal properties and have seen this herb work effectively for the ailments discussed above.
