Beta Glucan

Have you ever heard of a beta glucan? Beta glucans are sugars that are found in the cell walls of a number of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, algae, lichens, and plants (oats and barley in particular). They are polysaccharides that can vary depending on a number of factors, and each beta glucan has a different purpose in the organism(s) that they reside in.

Modern science has harnessed the power of beta glucan, and now beta glucan is being used for a number of applications in the health world. Here are just a few.

-Beta glucans help to reduce high cholesterol in a healthy manner, and are found in several commonly prescribed cholesterol medications.
-Because they are "safe" sugars, beta glucans are used in treating diabetes and helping diabetics get some of the nutrients they need in their diet.
-Beta glucans have been used to help bodies that are prone to weaknesses due to poor immune systems, chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety, radiation treatments, chemotherapy treatments, HIV/AIDS, several cancers, and/or physical or emotional distress. They help to boost the immune system and help keep the patient comfortable and/or stable. Beta glucans can be taken orally or administered via an IV.
-Beta glucans are found in common medications for the common cold, influenza, the swine flu, lyme disease, and a number of other disorders and diseases that specifically affect the immune system due to the “boosting” power that they have.
-Beta glucans can be used in a topical form. They can be found in several over the counter treatments for skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, bed sores, and burns.
-There is a small amount of evidence that beta glucans can be used in an anti-aging capacity, and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
